Removal and restoration of hair and hair-like regions within skin lesion images is needed so features within lesions can be more effectively analyzed for benign lesions, cancerous lesions, and for cancer discrimination. This paper refers to “melanoma texture” as a rationale for supporting the need for the proposed hair detection and repair techniques, which incompletely represents why hair removal is an important operation for skin lesion analysis. A comparative study of the state-of-the-art hair-repaired methods with a novel algorithm is also proposed by morphological and fast marching schemes. The hair-repaired techniques are evaluated in terms of computational, performance and tumor-disturb patterns (TDP) aspects. The comparisons have been done among (i) linear interpolation, inpainting by (ii) non-linear partial differential equation (PDE) and (iii) exemplar-based repairing techniques. The performance analysis of hair detection quality, was based on the evaluation of the hair detection error (HDE), quantified by statistical metrics and manually used to determine the hair lines from a dermatologist as the ground truth. The results are presented on a set of 100 dermoscopic images. For the two characteristics measured in the experiments the best method is the fast marching hair removal algorithm (HDE: 2.98%, TDP: 4.21%). This proposed algorithm repaired the texture of the melanoma, which becomes consistent with human vision. The comparisons results obtained, indicate that hair-repairing algorithm based on the fast marching method achieve an accurate result.  相似文献

Pollen morphology is widely used in taxonomic treatments of tribe Vernonieae, and differences in exine structure and aperture form have been described for many species within the genera comprising the tribe. However, in recent years a number of new species have been described and, in the present paper, we describe in detail the pollen of 24 species of the tribe which are either endemic or uncommon to certain regions of Argentina or of Paraguay. The pollen of these species are radially symmetrical and more or less spheroidal, 3‐colporate or, in one species, 3‐porate; the exine may be tectate or semitectate and microperforate, with echinate lophae or, in the 3‐porate example, psilate lophae. Using a range of characteristics related to size, shape, wall thickness, apertures and tectum surface morphology, five of the six pollen types previously described for tribe Vernonieae, and a subtype, are recognized. Our results support the usefulness of pollen morphology in helping to determine the taxonomic position of species within tribe Vernonieae.  相似文献

G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) constitute a remarkable protein family of receptors that are involved in a broad range of biological processes. A large number of clinically used drugs elicit their biological effect via a GPCR. Thus, developing a reliable computational method for predicting the functional roles of GPCRs would be very useful in the pharmaceutical industry. Nowadays, researchers are more interested in functional roles of GPCRs at the finest subtype level. However, with the accumulation of many new protein sequences, none of the existing methods can completely classify these GPCRs to their finest subtype level. In this paper, a pioneer work was performed trying to resolve this problem by using a hierarchical classification method. The first level determines whether a query protein is a GPCR or a non-GPCR. If it is considered as a GPCR, it will be finally classified to its finest subtype level. GPCRs are characterized by 170 sequence-derived features encapsulating both amino acid composition and physicochemical features of proteins, and support vector machines are used as the classification engine. To test the performance of the present method, a non-redundant dataset was built which are organized at seven levels and covers more functional classes of GPCRs than existing datasets. The number of protein sequences in each level is 5956, 2978, 8079, 8680, 6477, 1580 and 214, respectively. By 5-fold cross-validation test, the overall accuracy of 99.56%, 93.96%, 82.81%, 85.93%, 94.1%, 95.38% and 92.06% were observed at each level. When compared with some previous methods, the present method achieved a consistently higher overall accuracy. The results demonstrate the power and effectiveness of the proposed method to accomplish the classification of GPCRs to the finest subtype level.  相似文献

Alitocoris Sailer, 1950, consists of four valid species described from Central America. In a recent cladistic analysis of Ochlerini, the genus was considered paraphyletic in the Herrichella Distant, 1911, group of taxa. The present study provides a cladistic analysis of the Herrichella clade, using 88 morphological characters and 40 taxa representing 21 genera of Ochlerini, including all known species of Alitocoris plus 16 new species. Outgroups included Eritrachys bituberculata Ruckes, 1959, Phereclus pluto Stål, 1862, and Adoxoplatys comis Breddin, 1903, with the last used for rooting. The cladistic analysis was conducted using TNT under heuristic searches and implied weighting of characters; 11 K‐values calculated for an average character fit ranged from 50 to 90% of a perfectly hierarchical character. The results corroborated the paraphyly of Alitocoris, calling for changes in the classification of the genus with the proposition of three new genera for two, three, and ten species, respectively, that will be described elsewhere. Alitocoris is redescribed and a key for the species is presented. Alitocoris brunneus, Alitocoris maculosus, and Alitocoris parvus are removed from the genus, and the new species Alitocoris grandis sp. nov. , Alitocoris lateralis sp. nov. , and Alitocoris ornatus sp. nov. are described. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Following the study of 28 species of Lepturinae (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) the karyotypes of seven additional Palaearctic and one Nearctic species are established. The 19,X male karyotypes found in genera Stictoleptura (four species), Vadonia and Judolia (one species each) confirm the loss of Y chromosome in Lepturini. The 22,XY male karyotype of Cortodera humeralis is very close to that of some species of Rhagiini (genera Gaurotes, Acmaeops, Dinoptera, all 22,XY) and Grammoptera ruficornis (24,XY) recently reported. We propose that these taxa could form a monophyletic group within Rhagiini. The karyotype of the Nearctic species Desmocerus palliates (23,neoXneoXneoY) is quite different and characterized by the presence of many acrocentric chromosomes and a complex autosome–gonosome translocation. Its particular karyotype is compatible with its present classification within a separate tribe, the Desmocerini.  相似文献

The increasing diversity of the US coupled with the continuing need for information gathered about race/ethnicity require us to re-examine our practices of collecting and tabulating such data, particularly from individuals of mixed heritage. In the context of Census 2000, which allowed people for the first time to identify with multiple race groups, this article focuses on the context of education and looks at high school students’ self-­identification practices on forms. Survey data gathered from 638 freshmen during 1999–2000 at a diverse, public high school in California indicate: there can be high levels of inconsistency in students’ individual identifications depending on question format and response options provided; and, overall demographic counts can greatly vary depending on how multiple-response data are tabulated. Students’ responses raise questions about whether it is possible to attain a high level of measurement reliability when working with a diverse population that includes individuals of mixed ­heritage.  相似文献

Artificial biochemical networks (ABNs) are a class of computational dynamical system whose architectures are motivated by the organisation of genetic and metabolic networks in biological cells. Using evolutionary algorithms to search for networks with diagnostic potential, we demonstrate how ABNs can be used to carry out classification when stimulated with time series data collected from human subjects with and without Parkinson's disease. Artificial metabolic networks, composed of coupled discrete maps, offer the best recognition of Parkinsonian behaviour, achieving accuracies in the region of 90%. This is comparable to the diagnostic accuracies found in clinical diagnosis, and is significantly higher than those found in primary and non-expert secondary care. We also illustrate how an evolved classifier is able to recognise diverse features of Parkinsonian behaviour and, using perturbation analysis, show that the evolved classifiers have interesting computational behaviours.  相似文献

We have performed an amino acid composition (AAC) analysis of the complete sequences for 235 secondary transport proteins from Escherichia coli, which have functions in the uptake and export of organic and inorganic metabolites, efflux of drugs and in controlling membrane potential. This revealed the trends in content for specific amino acid types and for combinations of amino acids with similar physicochemical properties. In certain proteins or groups of proteins, the so-called spikes of high content for a specific amino acid type or combination of amino acids were identified and confirmed statistically, which in some cases could be directly related to function and ligand specificity. This was prevalent in proteins with a function of multidrug or metal ion efflux. Any tool that can help in identifying bacterial multidrug efflux proteins is important for a better understanding of this mechanism of antibiotic resistance. Phylogenetic analysis based on sequence alignments and comparison of sequences at the N- and C-terminal ends confirmed transporter Family classification. Locations of specific amino acid types in some of the proteins that have crystal structures (EmrE, LacY, AcrB) were also considered to help link amino acid content with protein function. Though there are limitations, this work has demonstrated that a basic analysis of AAC is a useful tool to use in combination with other computational and experimental methods for classifying and investigating function and ligand specificity in a large group of transport or other membrane proteins, including those that are molecular targets for development of new drugs.  相似文献

Though the history of disease has an evolutionary history in itself, this history of pathologies, which are physical manifestations of immune responses to disease processes, has a history that is intimately linked to the history of the host organisms themselves. But many of these physical manifestations of an organism's response to disease are related to aspects of the immune system that are rooted so deeply in the phylogeny of vertebrates, or at least amniotes, that one must exercise caution when interpreting a pathology as novel. Here, we argue that the interpretation of paleopathologies must be founded on the basis of disease manifestations which relate to phylogeny, but recognise that much of this relationship is so deeply rooted that novel paleopathologies would be rare. The former presents an interesting speculation, but does not allow for placement of findings within an ecological and chronological context. Likewise, the assignment of specimens as paleopathological holotypes defeats this purpose in attempting to narrowly define the physical manifestation of the immune response to disease, doing nothing more than a photographic library of paleopathologies could do, but not conveying the true nature of paleopathologies and could lead to artificial classification schemes that would cause more confusion than clarity.  相似文献
